I described in an earlier post my decision to make my blog less consumerist, and I've always leaned more toward personal style than runway fashion--although of course I am interested in runway fashion, and in fact see couture as an art just like any other. But as a college student on a very limited budget, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to see how long I could go without actually buying new clothes.
I think it will be a nice challenge to mix up outfits out of things I already have and breathe new life into my wardrobe using simply my imagination. And this way, I'll be able to save up money, because I have been discussing renting a house with several friends this summer--we want to get a great old place with tons of character, though we might regret it this time next year. Oh, and a dog, of course. My friend Leah's hoping for a schnauzer named Fitzgerald.
I also am feeling kind of guilty about all the shopping I've done this winter break. I've gotten some good pieces, though, and I hope to actually get some wear out of them before I'm distracted by something new, something I tend to do which leads to a closet full of pieces which remain unworn or not-worn-often enough. So don't think I'm going to stop posting outfits and talking about the highlights of my closet by any means!
In fact, I'm really excited about my Last Purchase. I knew that the one thing missing from my closet was a really awesome pair of jeans, a go-to kind of pair, in a basic blue, with a great fit and details that would make me excited to wear them with everything from a Sonic Youth t-shirt to my child's-size-medium P.E. sweatshirt or a sweater adorned with a collection of my great-grandmother's brooches. A piece versatile enough to actually extend my wardrobe, you know?I found these jeans, actually, on a shopping trip on an unseasonably warm day this week, on a clearance rack--exactly three pairs of these jeans were left, and one of them looked about right. I rushed to the dressing room and found that they fit like a glove and did things to my legs that usually only elongated wall mirrors and my mother's high heels do.
They were blue-gray skinnies by Rock Revolution. In my many years of obsession with jeans, the one one thing that always reels me in is an adorable label, which these jeans certainly have:
Awesomely enough, they are also 100% handmade. ( I also love the chevron-shaped seam in the back of the leg, it's a fun detail which adds structure.)I can't wait to wear them and I'd love to sing their praises more but there's something even more exciting which I will be singing the praises of very soon: my baby niece, Ella Cate, who is due tomorrow! So here's to her, and here goes nothing! Well, buying nothing, that is.

Fabulous brooches!
I quit buying new clothes about a year ago, and now have challenged myself to get it all second hand. Occasionally, I shop at Target or something of the like, but that is only after I scour the the thrift store for a certain item, with no luck!
Those jeans look... ohmygod. I have a pair of grey skinnies I found on clearance about a year ago and I've worn them more than any other pair of pants I've ever owned in the entire history of pants. Good luck with not buying! I think I'd last all of... oh, three-ish days.
I've been thinking about doing this too, "not buying it"...because I need to save up for a good cam and laptop, but I get really scared when I think about what I'll miss when I'll be not doing my usual second hand-rounds...like yesterday I found YSL merino wool polo for 3 euros...
I love those jeans. I have to go get me some. But, alas, I am also on the quick, easy, 2 month "stop purchasing" program.
I applaud you! A few months ago I went through a season of writing down every single thing I bought. It really does help one realize the consumerism of our culture. Best of luck to you. I look forward to hearing the results
Good for you! I shall be doing the same and am hoping to get through the entire year, minus the possibility of winter gear to keep from freezing. We can do it! :)By the way, my Last Purchase was also a pair of jeans, by J&company <3
I love those brooches! They look great!
BTW, I've added you to my list of favourite blogs!
Greetz,
Imelda
love those brooches!!!
yes it is the Feist remix :)
I once read something about a lady went a whole month (or was it a whole year?) without buying ANYTHING (except for food, I suppose) which seems like quite a trial...
Those jeand look great, I love the color, have to check their website.
I commend you for doing this! I'm having a backlash against 'FAST-FASHION'...i.e. buying the latest thing that drops onto the UK high street.... but alas, I can't go the whole hog and do a total-shopping-ban...it's just too unnatural for me....
I wish you the best of luck and judging from your slew of recent purchases, you'll go a long way without those consumerist needs niggling away at you... !
Ella Cate is a cute name
those jeans sound really good too!
I'm sure, you'll get the best of your wardrobe.
I need to follow your lead!!!I have been horrible at wasting money and I never repeat my clothes for a long time!!Actualy I have never repeated my clothes at church! And thats horrible !
I used to buy a tremendous amount of clothing, and then I just stopped. Or I stopped and started buying blush. I rarely buy clothing these days, although I did just get a darling leopard mini-trench at an after-Christmas clearance.
Love those jeans! You are a true rock-and-roll chick.
Give Ella Cate a hug from me!
Love the brooches, I have picked up a few recently myself as well, although the real problem is where to put them? Just the other day, I made them into pendants, stringing them on to necklaces, and attached them to my bags!
Pilgrim- That woman (Judith Levine) actually spoke at my university a few months ago. It was so interesting- they could only buy raw ingredients, nothing prepared, and couldn't go places that cost money, like movies or museums that aren't free. I for sure couldn't do it.
we wanted to see how long we could go without purchasing a single luxury item, clothing, shoes, junk food--all the "we don't desperately need it stuff" we set Feb. 9 2007 as our start date, and after a few weeks the whole "getting stuff" urge started going away--the habit of not buying got stronger and we felt great that we were able to go 7 months without shopping --we even cut out restaurants and had fun making Chinese food at home. The money we saved paid for a vacation to Japan. We never knew how little purchases can add up.
That is a great idea, I'm getting sick of buying cheap and disposable clothing too so less of that in the new year! Plus its always fun to revamp old items in the wardrobe and make it contemporary.
You know, I tried to do the same thing - see how long I could go without buying anything. And it lasted 2 weeks. Now for me, that was quite an achievement, but I could definitely use improvement. At least we have shown some effort!
Anonymous: What a story and an inspiration! Maybe in the end I really will get that puppy.
This is a strong right resolution, I wish you good luck!
Every here and there, I spend a period without buying new clothes. Living in a small city, without chains or thrift store and having no much money for expensive things really help me! Then, when I saved enough money I have my wonderful single day of glorious shopping in a big city. And I love it!
I'm sure you'll be really creative with your wardrobe and I can't wait to see all of your mix&match outfits :-)
I wish you luck with your not buying saga! It's a great idea, and with those last purchases definetly possible.
the jeans, from what i can see, look INCREDIBLE
i need a pair of really really great jeans
ooo good idea, i should try that!
cute broaches btw, i love old lady jewelry haha
congrats to the new aunt!
I'm already 11 days and counting in my not-buying-any-more-summer-clothes phase (we're heading into winter soon). Can you tell that it's sort of a NY resolution? I'm just trying to wear and wear again what I have in my closet. Best of Luck! :-D
I think it's a great idea Heather, it's sickening how much we consume as a society and how much we throw away. I've started thrifting for clothes a lot more as a conscious decision. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to take the buy no more step myself, but I wish you lots of luck, I think it will be a very interesting experiment, and I look forward to reading about it. It's a great story from a journalistic point of view. We should learn how to sew, that would be so great. It's something I've always wanted to do, I'm just not sure I have the skill or patience required!
great challenge to yourself! I need to challenge myself something like that too - it would save me so much money!
I go to school in a really small town, so I try not to shop much when I'm here unless it's thrifting. I like to save as much money as I can and take a big shopping trip to Chicago at the end of the term!
Very cute pins!
Cool!
The brooches are tres chic!
I try to find 'new' stuff in my closet. But I do love shopping so dearly.
xoxoxoxo
i wish i could afford good, quality jeans, but the most expensive jeans i've ever gotten wer $25.
i do try to spend money less, but idon't think that's happening.
Very exciting and daring venture! Best of luck.
i'm wishing for a safe delivery for your niece~!!! :) and good luck with your challenge!
Consumerism kills me.
I always ends up buying useless things that I rarely wear or use. I mean I bought these Micheal Kors wedges for 50 dollars last summer that I never wore and I'm not even middle aged!
Maybe I'll try the not-buying-useless-shiz thing for a while. Lord knows my bank account will thank me.
Wow. good for you, i have no self-discipline. good luck!
Yes, I agree with your sentiments about consumerism wholeheartedly! Style is infinitely more interesting than the latest Choos that someone bought ;)!
Good luck on your little mission(which must be especially stylish, with those brooches in your possession!)
I really need to do that no-buying thing, being an impecunious student myself, and setting up to study abroad in the summer which means not only will I not be working as usual, it will cost me thousands, and anyway, why should I buy clothes when I'll just have to either carry them or leave them at home? Here's to the attempt, I'll do my best. Good luck!
i totally know how you feel... i'm planning to not buy more clothes, hang up all the clothes i do have (they always end up on the floor), and start thinking up a lot of cute outfits before the spring semester starts up! by the way, thanks for leaving me those comments... do you want to exchange links?
I tried doing this (not shopping) oh so many times in 07 but I always succumb to temptation and fail =[. I think a great pair of jeans that you can wear with everything and fit perfectly is a necessity.
I loved the brooches! And I'm sure you would do the best mix and remix with your wordrobe.
Thank you for the happy birthday wishes
I’ve apreciated a lot.
Thanks.
xoxo
I think everyone might jum on that no buying new stuff considering the post christmas sales were awful and hypnotizing. (Roo many trips to the mall, too much purchased!)
Congrats on your soon-to-be new family member, and also on the jeans. Doesn't happen often, so treasure both!
The jeans look perfect! I also try to buy less and to create more new looks from the things I already have.
Yikes, good luck with your not-buying decision. :|
I'm planning to buy quality rather than quantity this year (on a tight budget) so I'll need some inspiration. I can't wait to see what you come up with, good luck! Fab brooches too.
those jeans look incredible, im looking to buy some new jeans, but i want them to really really skinny at the ankle. are these ones?
I want to be as brave as you on this crusade. I am a self proclaim shopaholic and I really need to stop.
I'm a sucker for cute labels too. Those jeans look nice, can't wait to see you match it up.
Cool label on those jeans for sure.
Wow, that sounds really difficult. I always feel like I should try that too - but then I go shopping again. Good luck!
i admire your valiant idea! i think you can undoubtedly make your old clothes feel new again by wearing them in ways you never have.. (plus it's a good idea to not buy too many clothes if you're a college student- duh).
i can't wait to read more about it. maybe i'll even jump in the experimentation, too!
great find :)
i could never make myself not buy any more - i don't think i could resist!
x
good look with trying not to buy anything,
ive had that goal since i dont know when and it has never worked !!
Kudos to you! I tried to go with making all my clothes or going to thrift stores, I didn't last long. I will try again, I think. less consumerism is good. Gifts like my rainboots don't count, right? Right?!?!
Wow! I am totally on the same wagon. I'm kindof disgusted with my need for new shinies. Perhaps when the jones kicks in too bad, you and I can start swapping. That doesn't break any promises...
Haha. I'm a shopping addict. That would never work for me. Its bad.
Yeah, I like looking at fashion but part of me thinks that the people who buy $1200 blouses are suckers.
Vintage really is the happy medium.
And holy smokes, Comment McCommentson.
Wow, good for you! I really can't imagine not buying any new clothes, just because I constantly have new ideas to update my wardrobe, but I have a ton of respect for anyone who can successfully do that -- good luck!! And awesome jeans by the way...never underestimate the power of amazing jeans to make an outfit exciting :)
My Godness?? Are you going to be able to do that? I mean, I can spend maybe a month without buying anything, but then, there is this feeling, -I think it's not pure consumerism because it only happens to me with clothes, not anything else- it's like "I need to have something new to mix with... bla, bla, bla", I know, excuses, but it works like that to me. I am really wondering how long are you going to be able to manage this situation!! good luck
