So I usually end up watching way too many little kids' television shows with my little brother anyway. But today he got his hands on a copy of The Magic School Bus so I was actually pretty pumped--I loved the show back in elementary school so pretending to pay attention to something else while actually nostalgically watching over his shoulder was entirely in order. (Honestly, I think that The Magic School Bus was why I didn't do so well in Astronomy--I mean, I expected field trips to Jupiter and like, fun, but it was all numbers and like, memorize the constellation. Oh, and fun fact: Lily Tomlin does the voice of Ms. Frizzle...)
But anyway, my subsequent years of experience in life, science, and clothes since I last saw the show led me to an amazing discovery: all the kids on the show were a serious coalition of hipsters*-in-training! Look for yourself (sorry the pictures are so small!):

Carlos, the adventurous know-it-all one, perfectly embodies the Flex Fleece-and-Slim Slack wearing, Williamsburg dwelling fashionista-boy... just check out those kicks!

Keisha, of course, is your classic club-hopping, sophisticated Facehunter Girl.

D.A., however, is straight out of the streets of Helsinki.

Phoebe, in her awesome romper, embodies classic mod with a little bit of twee.
And last but not least, Arnold. Arnold! The hypochondriac, geeky-chic kid with the specs... Dare we say the next Rivers Cuomo?

Oh, and don't worry, Penny Lane, I'm working on it! I just love a lot of stuff...
*I mean "hipster" in the sense of "embodies awesome style..." nothing detrimental. I mean, just look at them!

This post was rather hilarious. And I too loved the adventures of Ms. Frizzle and her class on the magic school bus. My favorites were when they got baked into a pie, and when they went to get the cacao beans from Brazil (I think it was Brazil) and when they went inside Arnold's body. Good times. I can totally see what you mean when you say that they are all hipsters, I never would have noticed, but now that you mention it, it makes a lot of sense.
hahaha --- great post quite adorible.... never really paid much attention in class during the magic school bus but i heart post on cartoons
I loved loved loved The Magic School Bus. A regular staple, and when I had a bout of insomnia over the summer, was mighty pleased when I found it on at 4am on tlc (I think). How else would I know how a cucumber becomes a pickle?
Heather, you are a genius!
I was just thinking a minute ago about how there are somany cartoon characters to take inspiration from.
And then clicked onto your blog and let out a sigh of...well, nostalgia!
They showed that show here too and I swear I was so little when I watched it.
And yeahh Lily Tomlin, she is a babe in I Heart Huckabees, one of my favourite films.
phewww.
Oh wow - it's so true! I love the Magic School Bus so its especially awesome that you are posting on this. Ms. Frizzle's style was pretty bangin' too, if I remember correctly.
Omg this was my favorite show back in the day! I had all the books. My 4th grade science teacher looked exactly like Ms. Frizzle (red hair and all). It was so weird.
LOL! I totally remember watching this when I was younger! And I also remember when they came out with the cartoon. cute post!
So, true!
Do you watch Arthur?
that was the most genius thing I have heard in a long time, and the magic school bus is dear to my heart. I'm going to ask bioethics teacher if we can watch it in class during our double block tomorrow because he's always running out of things for us to do
This is so true. I would probably wear all of the outfits of the girl characters. I loved the show when I was little but was kind of upset by the fact that they never needed permission slips for their field trips.
Ahhh, that was the greatst show of all time. My friend owns every DVD.
Its amazing how hip all cartoons seem to be.
You totally nailed it! I can't believe I never noticed how much the characters were hipsters-in-training.
Great point, haha! Magic School Bus was such a hit during my elementary days.
Old comics are good fun too, Lots of ridiculous ads and the characters are such scene kids!
Justice league of America! 1990
omgosh!! aren't you the best!! i love the magic school bus and still do and hahaha!! i've always lvoed looking at ms.frizzle's outfits. they're always different and eccentric.
Haha! So great! I used to totally love that show! :)
Haha, that's hilarious. I used to love that show too. :] Woo elementary school!

haha oh! I use to watch this pogram when i was younger..;)
Another brilliant post. You have a good discerning eye and notice the most awesome things. I loved the magic school bus too!
Lord... this cartoon never made it across the pond but I spotted hipster/nu-rave makings in the Jetsons, Scooby Doo and the like...
that's seems funny :)
Good eye, madam! Also loved the show and it gave me the warm fuzzies to see it talked about. :)
Oh, I loved that show and the books. They did dress those characters well--but then aren't so many children dressed adventurously? Awesome post.
ahh, memories. my sister & I used to run around the house yelling "you might get baked into a pie!!!!" and bursting into hysterics. cartoon style rules.
omg! I absolutely LOVE this post!
hahahah
brings back so many memories!!
remember that episode where they went in this huge room that had no friction?!! and they just slid around everywhere..
hahaha
god, I need to get those videos for my nephew.
LMAO...totally hilarious!
Oh my, I haven't watched the magic school bus in years! Memories flooding back now
Agreeing very much on carlos' american apparel poster-boy-chic look!
Very amusing observation
i love love love when they go inside the human body! that show was brilliant!
As nutty as she was, Ms. Fizzle had the best outfits ever.
i used to love the magic school bus books. I never noticed how well they dressed though. i agree about the boringness of field trips, if they were more like the magic school bus trips i would have done much better.

What an awesome post! You are so witty. I remember this show, it was definitely one of my favorites growing up. I'd like to say that I'm a cross between Keisha and Phoebe.
HAHA
loooved this post! actually one of my favorite blog posts in a while, of any blog!
carlos is a bit of a hottie too, huh?
huh?
um, i mean.....yeah nevermind
Haha. I see it! They were teaching us good style ideas, while still teaching us important things, like what goes on inside a human body (Arnold!). That is so great.
I used to watch this everyday when I was a kid! I love the way you connected the characters style. I thought I was the only one who thought their outfits iconic.
And thanks for adding me to you list of blogs. I'm very honored and plan on updating mine soon!
omg haha love love love it! yea magic school bus set way too high of standards for science class, dissecting the fetal pig made me wanna barf, unlike the unbelievably awesom ep where they go into the body and the blood cells look like spagheddios! i'm sure there must be a facebook group about ths afflivtion haha
I completely forgot about the Magic School Bus! I wonder if I can find any clips on Youtube... ha ha.
Awesome post... I say Captain Planet and style, next ;)
Hahaha, thats awesome
i loved the Magic School Bus!!!
had the pc-game too!
haha, this was HIlarious. i LOL-ed my way through it:)
I love the Magic School Bus. I watch old tapes with my nephew all the time.
I think my style is most like D.A.'s.
You had to memorise constellations in astronomy?? At uni it's all about stars and supernova and relativity and galaxy formation. Dayum.
I never saw this show, so feel left out. I liked seeing the comments you made about it, though, because it's the only way I'd ever have any idea what it was about.
I feel so old!
Omigosh i love this post
I use to always watch that show afterschool, thank you for bringing back those memories!
sweet :)

These are adorable, very cute indeed. We missed out on this programme in South Africa so my fashion education is incomplete :)
I find it amazing that there are only 30ish episodes of The Magic School Bus, and that it came around in the early 90's, and that children are STILL watching it. Well, with good reason though!
Brilliant post, Heather ! Fantastic ! I remember I used to love this show when I was little. I would never have guessed that those kids would become trendsetters, but there you go, they do have some rocking outfits !!
i loved the magic school bus
Ya know what a really good cartoon with great fashion?
As Told By Ginger
The characters' outfits changed as the day did.

The Magic School Bus was my life when I was a kid. I had a huge crush on Carlos and I actually learned how to correctly pronounce my l's because I said his name so much. True Story.
